Editing the Main Page[]

Perhaps mention on this page what is needed to edit the Main Page of a Wiki? Fastfalter (talk) 04:09, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi and thanks for the suggestion. I've added a section Protected pages, which explains why pages may be protected, provides a link to Protected pages, and most importantly explains how you can request an edit to be made for a page if it's protected. The main page is almost always protected so that only administrators can edit it, so it would likely be best if you follow the procedure in the section I added. Does this help you out?--Madminecrafter12 (talk) 04:13, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
Yes, that will help the next user figure out the reason, thanks.
On a related note, is there any way to get control of the main page? Asking for every change is untenable for building a new Wiki. Fastfalter (talk) 04:18, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
I certainly understand your point, but it is kind of standard to protect the main page for two reasons: A. it would be a huge target to vandalism and B. vandalism on the main page would have extreme consequences to the readers, as the main page receives far more page views than any other page. Although wikis are meant to be editable by anyone, it is a good idea to at least have the home page of wikis protected so that not just anyone can change it. Some wikis have an editcopy for the main page, basically a copy of the main page editable by anyone. An administrator will review any proposed changes on the editcopy and if reasonable copy them over to the main page. That is sometimes a bit less annoying than having to post to the talk page for every edit suggestion.--Madminecrafter12 (talk) 04:29, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
I get that, except for situations where we've requested the Wiki and gone through the application process to get it added. For getting around this, should we contact Woodhouse directly or is there a preferred avenue? Fastfalter (talk) 04:36, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
If you haven't already, and you've made a substantial number of edits, use the wiki claim if it's enabled on the wiki, to apply to become an administrator. If it isn't enabled, contact the wiki manager about the request. DSquirrelGMGRASP logo𝓣𝓟𝓒 13:00, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
You can also check the Community portal (usually in the top section of the sidebar to the left of the content area) on your wiki and see who your wiki manager is. That person can help you and potentially promote you if you've established trust — Game widow (talk) 14:17, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
Widow -- Thanks, Fusilli is the Manager, will contact him/her to get edit ability.
Squirrel -- The Claim button is enabled, but it is a new wiki so certainly haven't made a substantial number of edits. I understand not turning over Admin on an established wiki, but should be different on a new wiki that was added for you...not having control of the main page is like designing a site in reverse. Probably just an oversight, might bug Ben about it. Fastfalter (talk) 05:24, 14 January 2019 (UTC)
