Additional Usages

Something I have been, and still am seriously looking into on my home-wiki, is the addition of an incentive program, of sorts. These achievements seem to be a promising medium to look into:

As achievements are unlocked, will it be possible to have an automated code system sent out to their unlockers' talk-pages? I am thinking, with certain milestones, we can have very special awards, and maybe even an in-wiki currency that can be used within our community features.

I am also wondering: if more extensive parameters are sought, will it be easy to collaborate with Curse staff, to see towards their construction as additional achievements? GarouxBloodline (talk) 16:55, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

At this point we don't have plans for any automated notifications, although adding something to Echo is something we'll be looking into for a future iteration. As for some kind of in-wiki currency/incentive program, we have not really designed Achievements or Wikipoints with this in mind. Finally, for new parameters, it really depends. Some things may be possible, others may be impossible to track properly. You always have the option of creating manually-awarded achievements though! CrsBenjamin (talk) Curseicon 16:39, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
I don't want to be the one that knows everything, but a few minutes ago I saw some sort of notification that I got some achievements on the Dutch Minecraft Wiki. Unfortainly I was to slow to take a screenshot from it, but they are pretty large, especially for a 15.6 inch screen (they capture like 1/3 to 1/4 of the screen, but only for a few seconds) --DarkShadowTNT (talk) 19:06, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
Edit: Managed to capture one notification. --DarkShadowTNT (talk) 19:10, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

Users that have already surpassed base achievements

When this extension is deployed, what will come of the users that have already passed the requirements for the base achievements? Will they be automatically given all the achievements when the extension is deployed, or will they have to actually go through each achievement (in some cases means another several thousand edits, etc) like new users do? Or will admins of wikis have to go into the special page and manually give everyone achievements causing mass email spam and maybe recent changes spam, depending on how the logging of this thing works. This doesn't seem to be addressed anywhere. TheSatanicSanta (talk) 04:57, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

It will take a bit of time for the system to catch up, but they will be retroactively awarded all the achievements to which they are entitled — Game widow (talk) 13:15, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
awesome, very glad to hear it. TheSatanicSanta (talk) 15:39, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
Is this a bug, or is it just the system being new? I just received 'Reach 100 WikiPoints', but I have over 8500 WikiPoints on the Dutch Minecraft Wiki. Also, when I look on the WikiPointsAdmin page of the Wiki, I see that all the 25 achievements I have are all manually awarded. --DarkShadowTNT (talk) 14:22, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
We had to break up the "catching up" into manageable chunks. You should continue to get achievements, they just won't necessarily all arrive at once. Also, the system is not "live" until wednesday, so please be patient — Game widow (talk) 15:44, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

Exclamation marked achievements

I get 10 of Exclamation marked achievements Ac perform actions 5. Is it Secret achievs? If no, why is not displayed at this page list of? ← Alex Great talk 06:41, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

The exclamation mark achievements are for actions. You can mouse over each icon to tell you what they mean. --Alianin TC 18:29, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
I understand it, but my question is not about "How to know what this is". I asked is it secret achivements, or why this achievements is not displayed at this page. ← Alex Great talk 15:54, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
I see what you mean now. It was probably an oversight. We'll get it corrected and added to the list. --Alianin TC 16:18, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
Ok. ← Alex Great talk 07:25, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
I was mistaken. The achievements are secret and that's why they don't show up on the list. ;) --Alianin TC 15:26, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. ← Alex Great talk 12:57, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
To add to this, we just wanted there to be some achievements that would be a surprise. For the !-style ones, they are earned as a sort of combination of the other actions listed. As an admin, you can see them on Special:Achievements (once its live on Wednesday). CrsBenjamin (talk) Curseicon 15:49, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Encouraging Unnecessary Editing?

Won't achievements for numbers of edits and created articles encourage/reward superfluous editing? --Adaniel87 (talk) 17:59, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

We're hopeful that it won't be too much of an issue and that it will encourage GOOD editing and page creation. Admins have the ability to revoke achievements and wikipoints if the need arises. CrsBenjamin (talk) Curseicon 18:08, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Same Achievements Constantly Popping Up

This is a bug me and several other people are encountering on our wiki. For some reason any achievements earned (since Sept 5th specifically) will keep re-displaying on every single I visit across the GP network. This is making it almost impossible for one of our editors to edit as every time he loads a new page it is filled with 20+ achievement pop-ups, which appear to be the same achievement notices each time. --CommanderMark (talk) 18:28, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

I can confirm that issue, because it happened to me too after an edit (actually a page deletion) on the Dutch Minecraft Wiki (it was luckily only one for a few seconds). After restarting my browser it was fine. --DarkShadowTNT (talk) 19:36, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
I went into the office earlier and fixed the issue that was causing this. It should not happen anymore. Azxiana (talk) 02:46, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

Logging In achievements possibly bugged

On the day of initial release the first achievement "Welcome to the Gamepedia Family" correctly unlocked, but since then all other Logging In achievements are stuck on 1/x. Does anybody else has that problem?

Cheers. Brady The (talk) 12:12, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

I will look into this! We did have to make an adjustment to it at one point, so that may be the root of the problem. CrsBenjamin (talk) Curseicon 16:40, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
I can confirm the above issue by Brady The; I did get to the 7 day achievement, but after that the days seems to reset randomly. Also, there is a large gap between the 7 day and 30 day achievements, if possible I suggest adding a logging-in achievement for 14 days to bridge the gap :) . Page Patrolling

Achievements > Page Patrolling > Cohort
Achievements in the Page Patrolling section are for admins only, correct?--NibKing (talk) 16:37, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Correct. Only admins can patrol pages. --Alianin TC 03:38, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
Also it can do Wiki Guards and bureaucrats. ← Alex Great talk 04:07, 26 September 2015 (UTC)

Wikipoints

For this page, the image for "Reach 1000 Wikipoints" is actually the image for "Reach 100 Wikipoints", "Reach 5000 Wikipoints" is actually the image for "Reach 500 Wikipoints", etc. Although I would edit this myself, it leads me to question if it's really 25k wikipoints needed for the mega achievement, or 2.5k :P -Xbony2 (talk) 23:23, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

Adding Reddit username to profile appears broken

I tried linking my Reddit username to my profile, but it seems to be broken. The achievement (The Little Alien) is unlocked regardless. On the user preferences page the username field for adding a Reddit account is being reset to empty and not actually being added.

On a side note, I think there is no actual check on any of the profiles being added. Achievements are unlocked regardless of being correctly linked, allowing anything to be added as long as it matches proper formatting. Removing afterwards still keeps the achievement. Hope this can be fixed.

Edit: For some reason it worked just now when adding Reddit on here instead of on the local wiki I work on (Savage Lands). It now properly updated local as well, so not sure what did the trick. Devilin Pixy (talk) 15:15, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

There was an issue identified with preferences not saving, but it has been fixed. Sorry for the inconvenience! --Alianin TC 13:40, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Custom achievements and backward compatible rewarding

I am curious about custom made achievements and rewards to be given to users who already met the requirements.

I just added a custom achievement with the only requirements to be 'Welcome to the Gamepedia Family' and 'Gaining Steam' checked in the Meta requirements without adding any triggers in the Completion Rules section. I noticed I personally did not get the achievement I created even though I meet the Meta requirements. Do users who already met those Meta requirements still get the achievement? Does it just take time for this achievement to be updated and rewarded accordingly or is manually adding this achievement to users needed?

Devilin Pixy (talk) 15:54, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

The way that the system works, if you create a custom achievement that requires achievements that are already earned, they won't ever trigger because the system only checks on "meta achievements" when one of the requisite achievements is earned. The way you can kind of skirt around this problem is to add a third (new) achievement that's easily triggered (e.g. make 1 edit or have 10 wikipoints). That way when the achievement triggered the system will do its check for related meta achievements. CrsBenjamin (talk) Curseicon 16:58, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
CrsBenjamin talk That doesn't seem to be a good solution, because adding a simple achievement is most likely already earned by many as well in most cases, so it would still be left un-earned. Only a counter would be triggered, but in this case and imaginably other cases not wanted or supposed to be needed. Without a check for already earned achievements adding new achievements based on other achievements will most likely remain an issue. Having to check all users who visited the wiki I work on to then reward them manually if qualified is going to be a pain.
Could adding triggers partly solve this or are they not checked back either? For example "Gaining Steam" which is a Meta achievement, but can be added as a trigger as well by having 'CurseProfileEdited' with '1 == profile-link-steam' and '2 !='? Will that still trigger even when already earned this meta achievement?
Really hoping something can be done to prevent the issue I am running into. Having a check done would really be helpful.
Devilin Pixy (talk) 18:44, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
So, I'm confident it will work. It doesn't matter if a person has 1,000 edits, if they make an edit and there's a new 1 edit achievement, it will then trigger the meta achievements. When I say add a new achievement, I mean to create a totally new 1-edit achievement, not just add the existing one. We'll look into how we can improve the system, but its not something we can implement right away. CrsBenjamin (talk) Curseicon 18:50, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
CrsBenjamin talk In this case the achievement should not require anything done on the wiki to get this custom achievement, just an account and having Steam linked in profile. Still curious about triggers and if they do check back. I understand this feature is still new and being worked on for improvement.
Edit: Also trying to avoid having multiple duplicate achievements if done the way you suggest.
Devilin Pixy (talk) 19:02, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
I'm curious what the achievement is for if there's already ones for both having an account and having Steam linked? Either way, the way that meta achievements are triggered is when AchievementA is earned, the system checks any related achievements (e.g. metas that require AchievementA) to see if they should be awarded. The reason why this won't trigger as-is is because neither of the two required achievements are being triggered and so the meta check process isn't firing. We're going to look into maybe adding an admin function that would re-check meta achievements, but I'm not sure what our timeline for that would be with the end of the year/holidays coming up so soon. CrsBenjamin (talk) Curseicon 20:37, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
CrsBenjamin talk The achievement I have created is used to point towards an extra feature implemented. Users will need both 'Welcome to the Gamepedia Family' and 'Gaining Steam' to unlock this extra feature. The feature then shows unlocked Steam Achievements for the game Savage Lands in an extra section created below the Wiki achievements. On my Savage Lands User page you can see an example. I have the custom achievement 'Achievement Time!' unlocked (currently the first Wiki achievement showing), although had to reward manually. Below you will see the Steam achievements I have unlocked for Savage Lands. These will show regardless of the custom achievement added though, but I may want to hook into them at some point for other custom achievements. If Steam is not linked, it will show info how to link Steam properly to unlock this feature instead. If Steam is linked but no Steam achievements unlocked, it will say so. Check some of my friends to see this. The custom achievement is just used to give this feature more attention.
Note: Make sure to check the show/hide buttons to show parts on the right column, default shows all, but state is stored locally.
Still curious about triggers (not counters) and if they check in the same way Meta achievements are checked.
Thank you for your replies. I like the idea of having an admin function for re-checking, this would make it a whole lot easier in cases like mine.
Devilin Pixy (talk) 16:14, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
That is super cool. Can you tell me more about how you've put this feature together? CrsBenjamin (talk) Curseicon 16:21, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
CrsBenjamin talk Sure, just a bit of coding Javascript/JQuery/JSON on the common.js as well as CSS styling on Hydra.css. I assume you can have a look into both or if you wish, I could explain in more detail ;-) I just sent you a friend request.

How can I disable achievement popups?

Hi, I really hate the achievement popups. How can I disable them globally for my account? Preferences->Notifications does not appear to effect this. - AnnanFay (talk) 15:04, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

At this time there is no option to turn them off. We realize this is an oversight on our part and plan to add a toggle for them in the future. CrsBenjamin (talk) Curseicon 16:22, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, good to know it's in the works! - AnnanFay (talk) 13:14, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

Has this change ever came about? Every page I open across Gamepedia I get the same pop-ups over and over..sometimes 3 at once. It's super annoying. The cookie pop-up occurs on EVERY page I visit as well. Something is definitely ammis. --Newyears1978 (talk) 05:45, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

Welcome to the Gamepedia family achievement glitch

When I get on a wiki as of late it keeps saying that I unlocked the Welcome to the Gamepedia family achievement, however when I check my achievements page it doesn't show it as being unlocked. OldenGamer (talk) 15:35, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

Profile Achievements not being Awarded

Hi! I don't really care about achievements that much, but I thought it would be good to point out that some of the Profile Achievements are not being awarded properly. For example, I have replied multiple times to comments on my profile page, however, I still have not received the Achievement "Talking Back." I also have E-mailed other Users but have not gotten the Achievement "You've got Mail". ReedemtheD3ad (talk) 17:49, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
EDIT: BTW, this was done on the Terraria Wiki (EN).

These issues have been resolved. I have now been awarded these achievements properly. ReedemtheD3ad (talk) 21:32, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

Mr/Ms Popular achievement

Hello! I just tested on No Man's Sky wiki that it counts the sent friend requests, not the accepted ones. Is it intentional for wikis with small number of editors? Gorla (talk) 12:41, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

This also occurred on big wikis as well, such as Wowpedia. Surafbrov 15:48, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
I thought so, but is it a bug or is it supposed to work this way? Gorla (talk) 20:27, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

"Add 10 friends to profile" shouldn't be a requirement for default Mega achievement

In my opinion the "Add 10 friends to profile" achievement shouldn't be one of the requirements for the "Master of X Wiki" mega achievement. Smaller wikis (such as Advent of Ascension wiki) may not have 10 active editors to begin with, which would prevent editors from getting the achievement unless they edited another wiki and added friends from there. Some editors might also be unwilling to send or accept friend requests, but have otherwise made many contributions to the wiki.

You could get the achievement by sending and cancelling requests to the same person 10 times (if that still works), but that's probably something that many people don't know about and defeats the purpose of the achievement anyways.

I also think the "Eye for style" and "Talkative" achievements should be applied when someone edits their userpage or someone else's user talk page (for people who prefer standard user pages instead of the profiles), although this is more of a minor thing. –Sonicwave talk 04:39, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

I would agree, in the context that having to "add x friends to profile" isn't really related to "mastering" a particular wiki, which appears to be what the mega achievements are intended to reflect. Perhaps that and "I Like You" should be removed from the mega achievements. Unscjon117 (talk) 01:25, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
I have raised the issue in the past. If I recall correctly (it is no longer possible to retrieve conversation logs), this proposal was initially dismissed (with an ambiguous statement saying in one interpretation that modifying the achievements locally could result in sanctions), but later said as if approved (though no action was taken). Though I revoked the requirements from the achievement on minecraft-en or minecraft-ru, the master achievement was not retroactively granted to people who only lacked the friends requirement; I was told that doing this automatically is not technically possible, and requires manually granting of the achievement to eligible users.
P. S. I would go even further and question the validity and usefulness of the concept of "friends" in the Gamepedia wiki environment. --AttemptToCallNil (talk) 06:34, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
Interesting, thanks for the info. My own view on the concept of "friends" in any web-based environment might be, if for no other reason, for purposes of "convenience" to be able to communicate with others more easily/readily, without needing to separately join other platforms and/or disclose PII (e.g. social media, etc.). Of course, having profile links to such services certainly makes it easier to use those for those that choose to do so. Unscjon117 (talk) 09:59, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

Police imagery on Patrol achievements

Given the recent attention to police violence in the United States, I feel that it may be respectful to the Gamepedia community to replace the policeman depicted in the Patrol achievements to avoid the underlying message of Wiki admins as armed "beat cops". Perhaps a searchlight, shield/firewall, or similar logo could be used instead? I hope this is an appropriate place to discuss, and would be interested to know your thoughts.
